3月8日，《纽约时报》在其官方推特上先后发布了两条推文。

第一条发布于上午10点30分，讲述中国封城情况：

To fight the coronavirus, China placed nearly 60 million people under lockdown and instituted strict quarantine and travel restrictions for hundreds of millions of others. Its campaign has come at great cost to people’s livelihoods and personal liberties.

为了抗击冠状病毒，中国隔离了6000万人，并对数亿人实施严格的检疫和旅行限制。这场战‘疫’极大损害了人们的生活与个人自由。

3.quarantine: n.检疫隔离

20分钟后，《纽约时报》又发推文报道了意大利的封城情况：

突发新闻：意大利正在封锁米兰、威尼斯、以及北部大部分地区。他们冒着牺牲自己经济的风险来遏制这场欧洲最严重疫情的蔓延。

跟前一条推文相比，双标太明显：

中国：“以民众的生活和自由为代价”

意大利：“冒着经济风险”

这一事件也在引发了中国媒体的热议，人民日报更是称其为驰名“双标”。

今天借这个话题，就跟大家聊一聊“双标”的英文说法：

“双标”是网络流行语，完整说法是“双重标准”，翻译为“double standard”。 指“对同一性质的两件事情，使用不同的评判标准（a double standard implies that two things which are the same are measured by different standards）。

例句：

The governor is being accused of (having) double standards in being tough on law and order yet allowing his own cabinet members to escape prosecution for fraud.

州长被指责“双标”，他一方面要求严格对待法律和秩序，另一方面却纵容他的内阁成员逃脱欺诈起诉。

There are double standards when it comes to men and women appearing on screen as they get older. 

人们对于荧屏里的男性和女性变老这件事有着双重标准。

再回到《纽约时报》，两篇推文对“封城”一事的讲述也被指责为“双标：

New York Times is being accused of having double standards in criticizing China violated its people’s liberties yet praising Italy for risking its economy to contain coronavirus outbreak. 

《纽约时报》被指责“双标”，它一方面批评中国侵犯民众自由，一方面又赞扬意大利敢冒风险抗击疫情。
